In this video, students are asked to use 0, half, one whole to conceptually determine if one fraction is greater than, less than, or equal to another. The idea of cutting the fractions up to make common denominators is briefly mentioned, but the more important idea is developing fractional sense about the sizes of pieces by looking at the denominators and the numerators to see if that will allow them to compare the fractions. I would encourage you not to discuss multiplying to find common denominators and equivalent fractions at this time.
